what is rapid prototyping?
Prototype: an early sample, model, or release of a product built to test a concept or process or to act as a thing to be replicated or learned from
Rapid Prototyping: a group of techniques used to quickly fabricate a scale model of a physical part or assembly using three-dimensional computer aided design (CAD) data.

Why an Institute about rapid prototyping?
All three FWSU schools are investing in a variety of rapid prototyping tools.
Teachers are being encouraged to use these tools but many have never used them or even seen them in action.
Therefore, tools aren't being used to their fullest.
Before tools can be used educationally, they need to be used personally.
So why not take some time to learn and create and have...fun?

3d Printing"The action or process of making a physical object from a three-dimensional digital model, typically by laying down many thin layers of a material in succession."
We have a Makerbot Replicator, Generation 5. Files used for design:
CAD programs available:
|
Laser Cutting"The process of using a powerful laser to cut and/or engrave items from flat sheets of material like plastic, wood and many other materials."
We have an Epilog Zing 16 , 30 watt. Files used for design:
CAD programs available:
|
Smart Cutter"An electronic cutting machine that looks sort of like a printer. Along with some limited printing, it uses a very precise blade and a series of rollers to cut out pretty much anything you can imagine."
We have a Cricut Maker. Files used for design:
CAD programs available:
|
New This Year: GReen Screen"Green screen is when you replace the real background of a video with a digital background. ... The green screen effect is a post-production technique for compositing (layering) two images or video streams together based on color hues (chroma range)."
In the lab, we make a lot of green screen videos. It is a fairly simple process with far ranging applications. We have iPads with green screen apps and a green screen set up in the lab. |
New This Year: Game DesignA prototyping tool that we have been using for many years is GameMaker Studio, a drag and drop video game design and programming environment. What is especially cool about it is that students (and teachers) do not need to know how to write computer code to design a game. They simply need to chose from pre-programmed blocks to assemble games. This tool starts off being very easy to use yet has been used to code some very complex commercial games. It is a great place to start learning about how games are created.
